Miniatures - Fall Glow Collection

As the seasons turn, my work changes - different palettes emerge, different inspirations from plants and places. The light outside is changing, and these are a way of my bringing more light inside the home. 

 

Vintage-framed miniatures add a little bit of glow to any space. These are little original paintings on vintage Italian Florentine plaques - they’re solid wood, have little hooks, and were carved and painted in Italy between the 1940s and 1960s but emulate framemaking techniques that were developed in Italy as early as the tenth and twelfth centuries.

I paint each piece by hand paintings in the centers, as the plaques used to hold old prints. I gold leaf, paint on top with acrylics that are sheet enough to allow the foil to shine through and illuminate the colors, seal the art, and sign the back. I leave the beautiful carving that surrounds each painting in its original condition. 

Each one is a small, special piece that nonetheless has impact - a gallery wall, an unexpected spot or wherever the light hits it just right.
