To create my art, I start by gold metal leafing (or gilding) my canvas, creating a textured and reflective backdrop. I then use highly pigmented, sheer acrylic paints that I mix with glazing mediums to paint atop the surface of the foil. This technique allows the brushstrokes to light up and the colors to flow - and the layers develop a richness that changes depending on the lighting, angle, and time of day. This makes each piece interactive - sometimes it’s silhouetting the florals, sometimes it looks like it’s emanating its own light, sometimes the sun makes it reflect onto the ceiling or other walls. My work shows scenes from photos that I take of places I’ve been - landscapes, roadsides, street scenes. My florals are more so spontaneous works, but are inspired by a combination of plants from old botanical books, or from my imagination, or that I see in real life - whether that’s a street or a botanical garden.
